ULTIMATE GUIDE TO COLLEGE BASKETBALL RECRUITING

how college basketball recruiting worksOne of the main questions I get asked by parents time and time again is some variation of “how does college basketball recruiting work?”

And it’s understandable because recruiting can be a complicated and confusing subject.

In this ultimate college basketball recruiting guide, it is my goal to answer many of the basic questions and misunderstandings when it comes to college basketball recruiting.

Let’s start by first answering the question, what exactly does recruiting even mean?

WHAT ARE YOU WILLING TO SACRIFICE FOR BASKETBALL

Sacrifice in BasketballDo great basketball players make sacrifices?

Of course they do! So, here we are. The last segment in our posts describing the Pro Skills Basketball acronym of F.O.C.U.S. Fun, Overcome, Concentration, and Unity have all been written about.

Now we are down to the “S”…and it’s my personal favorite. The four previously mentioned topics are all extremely important concepts that basketball and youth sports can teach young kids.

But, the “S” is what takes some people to the top. The “S” is what holds 99% of us back. The “S” can be the greatest lesson that young people can apply to their adult lives.

Without it, nothing great has ever been accomplished. Without it, experiencing discomfort or enduring the struggles of adult life can be difficult to bear. Without it, we struggle to learn to make tough decisions.

The “S” in our acronym, and I believe the most important thing youth basketball can teach young players, stands for sacrifice.

THE TOP 6 BENEFITS OF AAU BASKETBALL

Benefits of AAU BasketballIn my last blog post, I wrote about the problems with AAU basketball, but as I stated in the article, as an AAU coach and club director with Pro Skills Basketball (PSB) Select, I’m actually a proponent of AAU.

I’m not an outsider taking shots at something I know nothing about.

Rather, I simply think that some of the problems with AAU basketball could be solved if parents, coaches and organizations were, number one, aware of the issues, and number two, took some relatively easy steps to correct the problems.

Regardless, for this blog post, I want to flip the lens and examine the benefits of AAU basketball.

Once again, I’m talking about AAU basketball as the “catch-all” term like Kleenex and not speaking specifically about the real AAU basketball organization, although many, if not all of the benefits, do apply to the real AAU.

My last caveat is that, when talking about the benefits of AAU basketball, I’m talking about AAU done the right way.

What does that mean you may ask?

To me, that means the team is coached by an experienced and knowledgeable coach, has positive and supportive parents, focuses on skill development and teaching over winning championships and/or going to “showcases” at a young age.

AAU basketball done right focuses on the bigger, long-term picture over the short-term, win-at-all-costs mentality. That’s why it’s vital that players find the right AAU program or team, and once they do, AAU becomes highly beneficial!
