CHINA YOUTH BASKETBALL: THE GOOD, BAD & UGLY

youth basketball in china

My first trip to China for basketball was in the summer of 2016 when we were hired by Nike Basketball Camps to run 3 weeks of camp in Hangzhou and Shanghai.

Going in, we didn’t know a ton about China youth basketball except that basketball was by far the most popular sport in China. In fact, we had read and heard about a pretty staggering statistic …

The number of people who play basketball in China is roughly the same as the population of the entire United States, which is about 300 million people!

Needless to say, we were super impressed and inspired in China by the popularity and love of basketball. We saw first hand the kids who were at the basketball camps as well as talked to as many people as we could, and we even played pick up basketball in the parks in Shanghai. We were so inspired actually that we decided that we wanted to open up Pro Skills Basketball full-time in China!

And that brings us to 2017, and currently as I’m writing this, we’ve just finished our first official summer as Pro Skills Basketball China. We ran 8 weeks of camp in 4 different cities, including Wenzhou, Bengbu, Chengdu, and Hong Kong, which you can read about here.

In this 2nd summer of youth basketball in China, we learned even more about Chinese youth basketball and that’s what I want to share today …

The Good, Bad, and Ugly of Youth Basketball in China!

NEWS: PSB HIRED TO RUN NIKE BASKETBALL CAMPS IN CHINA

Pro Skills Basketball (PSB) is proud to announce that we have recently been hired to run 3 weeks of Nike Basketball Camps in China this summer. Brendan Winters, co-founder of PSB and director of PSB Charlotte, along with Ross Schraeder, director of PSB Denver, will go over to China from July 24-August 13. From July 24-July 29, Brendan and Ross will be running a camp Changsha and then moving on to 2 more weeks of Nike Basketball Camps in Shanghai after that.

What Will Running Nike Basketball Camps in China Entail?

PSB has been tasked with creating the camp itineraries filled with the drills and skills that Brendan and Ross will be responsible for implementing and teaching at the Nike Basketball Camps attended by players ages 6-18 years old. “We’re really excited to bring Pro Skills Basketball over to China. We started as a single basketball camp 8 years ago and have been able to expand to running 21 camps in 5 different US cities this summer, so it’s really cool to be able to add 3 more camps and a whole other country to that list,” said Brendan Winters. Of the opportunity, Ross Schraeder says, “After playing basketball in Europe for a number of years, I’m excited to be able to see what basketball and life in Asia is like, and I’m super pumped that we’re able to do it all through PSB!”

Can’t make it to China (joke!)? Check out our summer basketball camps in Boston, Charlotte, Denver, Greensboro, and Sacramento! Our camps are a great opportunity for players ages 8-15 to learn the game of basketball in a fun environment surrounded by high level coaches. The camps include morning skill stations, individual competitions, games of 1v1 to 5v5, and prizes. Each participant will also get a free basketball and tee shirt. Don’t miss out and sign up now!
