HOW BASKETBALL CAN TEACH KIDS TEAMWORK & UNITY

As we continue with our blog series on F.O.C.U.S., we will now discuss Unity, which is the U in our acronym. As I’ve mentioned in past blog posts, on a personal level, the most lasting lessons that basketball and team sports taught me were the skills of working well with others.

I don’t remember a lot of scores, plays or highlights from my playing career, but the things that have lasted the test of time are the friendships I made along the way and the lessons I learned about working towards something bigger than myself.

Sometimes they were difficult lessons to learn. Sometimes they were downright painful. But below you will find 3 lessons on Unity that can be taught through basketball and other team sports.

4 WAYS TO IMPROVE MENTAL FOCUS & CONCENTRATION IN BASKETBALL

basketball concentration
At Pro Skills Basketball, we use the acronym F.O.C.U.S. in our attempt to make a change in a youth sports culture that we see as flawed.

The “C” in F.O.C.U.S. stands for “Concentrate” which involves an essential and crucial piece to the development of the young mind both in basketball and in life.

In short, the simple definition of concentration is “the action or power of focusing one’s attention or mental effort.”

Hopefully by now you’ve read PSB co-founder Logan Kosmalski’s blog post about the ‘F’ in our acronym F.O.C.U.S., which stands for Fun, Overcome, Concentrate, Unity, and Sacrifice.

overcome challenges in youth basketball

While it’s extremely important that basketball is an overall fun experience for youth players, it’s equally important to note that it’s not going to be fun all of the time. In fact, sometimes it may be the opposite of fun – it can be maddening, saddening, frustrating, or any of the other “negative” feelings/emotions, and this is not necessarily a bad thing!

Why?

LESSONS LEARNED FROM PLAYING BASKETBALL

How Basketball Taught Me to Have Grit

Basketball, and sports in general, have the ability to teach kids many life lessons. And that’s why here at Pro Skills Basketball we attempt to not only teach kids on the court but also hopefully teach them some important life lessons off of it as well.

To us, some of the most important life skills and lessons that can be taught through youth basketball can be summed up in our acronym F.O.C.U.S, which stands for fun, overcome, concentrate, unity, and sacrifice.

PSB Co-Founder, Logan Kosmalski, wrote about the “F” for fun in a previous blog post, and we’ll be writing about every letter/life skill over the next few weeks, but for now I wanted to share with you the most important lesson that I learned from playing basketball.

This is possibly the most important character trait that I believe I possess today due to basketball, and that trait is GRIT!
